“I didn’t know dogs could get pneumonia,” Hugo replied.

“I don’t know what pneumonia is,” King said. Maybe it was a sickness that gave you a glittery tail?

“Neither do I, but it’s really bad!” Lulu barked. “It’s contagious, it has nothing to do with my haircut, and I might even have to miss the wedding this weekend!”

“Oh no!” King exclaimed. “Feel better!”

As they walked away, Hugo could have sworn he heard Lulu whimpering inside. Strange—that wasn’t like her at all.

“Huh. Must be the pneumonia,” he said.

If Lulu isn’t going to help, King wondered, how are we going to find Waffles? Then he had an idea, and he wagged his tail with surprise! He wasn’t usually the one to come up with ideas, and it felt like digging in the mud and coming across an unexpected shiny rock.

“Let’s find Napoleon!” King said to Hugo. “Maybe they’re together? Maybe she followed him?”

Hugo agreed, and so it was a plan. They made their way carefully through the neighborhood on their way to Napoleon’s house, ducking behind trash cans and parked cars anytime a person walked or drove by. The last thing they wanted was for someone to alert their people that they were running around off leash.

“He’s probably not home,” Hugo said as they walked up Napoleon’s driveway. “But we should check just in case.”

As they got closer to the house, they realized that neither of them had ever been farther than Napoleon’s front yard, and they didn’t know how to find him.

“I know,” King said confidently. “Let’s ring the doorbell.” Another good idea!

Hugo just gave him a very skeptical look.

“What?” King asked. “I always run to the front door when I hear the bell! Maybe Napoleon will too! I bet if you stood on your—”

“Somebody out there?”

King was interrupted by the sound of Napoleon’s voice booming from the backyard.

“Coming over for a surprise playdate?” Napoleon barked. “I’m around back! Hop onto that tree stump to jump the fence.”

King turned to Hugo. “Too bad,” he said. “I really wanted to ring that doorbell.”

“Maybe next time,” Hugo replied, and they walked toward the backyard. Hugo used the tree stump to easily jump the fence, and then King did the same. What he saw when he landed was not at all what King had expected. Napoleon was lounging in a bright orange inflatable kiddie pool. He looked like he was on vacation.

“What?” Napoleon asked, sensing their surprise. “I like to sunbathe! And water bathe too.”

Napoleon splashed some water onto himself and shook it off, getting King and Hugo a little wet.

“So, what brings you to my backyard?” Napoleon asked, rolling onto his back with his belly up.
